Barry- the Wood Wizard

How to build shelves (or how not to build shelves)

Click on the photos for a larger view of the carnage.

Here is Barry the Wood Wizard surveying his work. All fingers accounted for!

Start with 'Banana Wood'. Banana wood is not nearly as rare as you might think. Just go down to your local Home Depot and go through the clearance rack. This "Banana board" was found for .51 cents per board. Now that's a bargain!
Find yourself an old crate to cut up for the shelves. Barry was lucky, he had the crate that his hot air balloon came in to work with. Save the unusual pieces for the Father-in-law who really knows what he is doing.

Plans? Barry doesn't need any stinkin' plans. Just lay out a few 2"x4"x8's and start screwing everything together.

Including if you run into a little problem of your crating pieces not being large enough. You may have to seam them together...

The photos on the left shows Barry's wood wizardry at work. Say that ten times fast...

The seam on this shelf is almost invisible.

The photos on the right illustrate some of the most amazing feats of wood wizardry I have ever seen. He couldn't find the chainsaw so he used the circular saw to trim the edge of the shelf. Amazing... .
The cross braces for the shelves have specially mitered corners. So, it's a bit hard to see, but you get the picture.
Barry sitting on his finished shelves. How does he do it? Incredible.

Disclaimer: Whenever doing any kind of project WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!!!! No squinting!

Penn State University  is in no way affiliated with this page. In fact, I apologize that the Wood Wizard is wearing that shirt. Nothing against Penn State mind you, but no university should be associated with this kind of wood hackery...
